When you save files to a drive, they typically don't get FULLY erased until you're rewriting new files and need that space on the drive. When you delete a file, most times it's still there. It's just deleted from the TOC (Table of Contents). The TOC is a line of data that tells the hard drive where your files are. Most times you can recover these deleted files as long as you haven't written over the space with new data or have done a COMPLETE format of the drive.
